A Pioneering Force in Nigerian Squash

The Ikoyi Club Squash Section boasts a rich history dating back to 1977, when it transitioned from being part of "Other Sports" to a dedicated section with four courts. Dr. Tony Madedor served as the first chairman, laying the groundwork for future growth.

In 1988, under the leadership of Chairman Mr. Bayo Adenubi, a new squash complex was commissioned in 1990 by Mr. Akin Aganga Williams. This expansion significantly increased the number of courts to nine. The section offers a comfortable environment for players with all seven courts being air-conditioned and featuring a gallery viewing area.

The Squash Section caters to the overall well-being of its members. In 1992, the Mr. Mike Agboola Committee spearheaded the addition of a standard gym, completed in 1994 by the Dr. Olukayode Roberts Committee. The section's kitchen serves delicious Nigerian dishes, providing a space for relaxation and socializing after a game.

The Ikoyi Club Squash Section has played a pivotal role in nurturing Nigerian squash talent. Mr. M.A.O Sofoluwe became the first Nigerian member to win the Club's Squash championship in 1967. Dr. Olukayode Roberts, a former chairman, etched his name in history by becoming the first Nigerian to win the British Open Veteran category in 1997.

The section holds the distinction of being the first club in Nigeria to have two qualified squash professionals: Mr. T. Mgbechi in 1975 and Mr. Sam Omonroseghe in 1978.

Ikoyi Club 1938 Squash Section's legacy extends beyond the club walls. Mr. Tayo Sofoluwe, a life member of the section, served as the first Chairman of both the Lagos State Squash Association and the Squash Federation of Nigeria, solidifying the section's role in the national development of the sport.
